Dr María Valdés Hernández is a Row Fogo Lecturer in Medical Image Analysis at the University of Edinburgh and a member of Edinburgh Imaging and the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences. Her work focuses on the development and application of advanced methods for medical image processing and analysis, with a particular emphasis on neuroimaging.

Her research focuses on imaging biomarkers, automated image analysis tools and computational methods applied to large multicentre and longitudinal clinical studies. She has particular expertise in brain imaging related to small vessel disease, neurodegeneration, multiple sclerosis and cognitive decline, as well as in the integration of machine learning approaches into neuroimaging research.

She trained as an electronic engineer and holds a PhD in Electronics and Informatics from Gunma University, Japan. Her career combines extensive experience in engineering, programming and algorithm development with their application to biomedical research and advanced medical image analysis.
