Dr. María José Serrano is Principal Investigator and Head of the Liquid Biopsy and Cancer Interception group at the Pfizer–University of Granada–Andalusian Regional Government Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research (GENYO) in Granada. Her scientific career has been particularly focused on the development and clinical implementation of liquid biopsy in oncology.

Her research focuses on circulating tumour cells, circulating tumour DNA and other blood-based biomarkers, aiming to improve early cancer detection, molecular characterization and disease monitoring across different solid tumours. A major area of her work is cancer interception, focused on detecting and characterizing cancer-related alterations at earlier stages and in populations at increased risk of developing disease.

She has led numerous national and international projects in liquid biopsy and precision oncology and is actively involved in initiatives aimed at translating these technologies into clinical practice. She is a co-founder and Vice President of the International Society of Liquid Biopsy (ISLB) and has an extensive scientific publication record in the field.
